Pro Film Critic –
The plot revolves around Louis D’Ascoyne Mazzini, played by Dennis Price, who seeks revenge against his aristocratic family by murdering the eight people ahead of him in the line of succession to the dukedom. Alec Guinness portrays all eight of these characters, showcasing his versatility as an actor. The film is based on the novel “Israel Rank: The Autobiography of a Criminal” by Roy Horniman and was produced by Michael Balcon at Ealing Studios. It features themes of class and sexual repression and is considered one of the best Golden-Age Ealing comedies.
